‘Through the Looking Glass’ is a large‑scale, immersive light sculpture by artist Dean Norton in collaboration with Studio John Fish presented as a centrepiece within the luxury mall at Chadstone Shopping Centre. It comprises 20 columns of dichroic glass with meticulously layered reflective surfaces resulting in a captivating inter-play of light and reflections. The sculpture responds dynamically, changing colour as people move in and out of it. From the moment I encountered it, I was captivated by the way light, reflection and movement transformed an ordinary shopping centre into something unexpected. Mirrors fractured and multiplied the space, creating fleeting moments where architecture, artwork, shoppers and shopkeepers became part of the same ever-changing composition. Rather than photographing the installation itself, I was drawn to the people who unknowingly ‘completed’ the work. Every reflection offered a new perspective, every passing figure a different story. Familiar scenes became abstract, playful and, at times, almost surreal. These photographs are my personal response to an installation that celebrates curiosity and invites us to see the everyday differently. They explore the beauty found in transient moments—where light, reflections and human interaction come together in ways that exist for only an instant before disappearing again.
