The Republic of Croatia, or Hrvatska, is perhaps better known as one of the constituent states of the former Yugoslavia. With its long Adriatic coastline and thousands of islands it is one of the World’s top 20 destinations: it’s relatively small population of just over four million is swamped by over 12 million tourists each summer. The coastal towns of Zadar, Sibenik, Split and Dubrovnik are the traditional hotspots but we primarily visited to see the two stunning National Parks – Plitvice and Krka – home to hundreds of stunning waterfalls which cascade over limestone and travertine ledges in classic Karst scenery. The war of the 1990s took a terrible toll on Croatia and evidence is still everywhere – from burned out villages to bombed factories, from newly tended memorials and churches to the new bright orange roofs of Dubrovnik (restored after the siege of Dubrovnik). The use of Dubrovnik as the setting for King’s landing in the TV Series “Game of Thrones” has put the ancient walled city under a similar strain to Venice.
