Yellowstone National Park is located across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and when it was declared a National Park in 1872 it was the first national park to be established in the US and arguably in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and geothermal features, such as the Old Faithful Geyser and Grand Prismatic Pool. The park spans an area of 9,000 sq km comprising lakes, canyons, rivers, flat valleys and a mountainous circumference. Yellowstone was once a super-volcano and the park covers the original caldera. The Yellowstone Plateaux has an average elevation of 8,000 above sea level. Native Indians have a documented history here of over 11,000 years but today Bison, Grizzly Bears, Wolves and Elk wander freely. The summer here is dramatically short and winter long and fierce.
