This restored Shepherd's hut is similar to dozens that were to be found all over the Dorset Downlands in lambing time. Shepherds used them to keep newly born lambs warm and for their own convenience during the long hours of the lambing season. Gabriel Oak nearly dies in one in "Far from the Madding Crowd" but is rescued just in time by Bathsheba his neighbour.
