Weyhill Fair
This annual agricultural gathering was the largest of its kind in England with over 400 stalls; hop, horse, sheep and cheese sales. It is here that in the tent selling "Furmity" (a kind of spicy porridge laced with rum) that Henchard gets drunk and auctions his wife to Newson, a sailor, in the story "The Mayor of Casterbridge".
