Towards the end of their marriage Thomas and Emma became distant from one another. Although they still breakfasted together, took tea together – often with visitors – and enjoyed cycling the laneways of Dorset together Hardy spent his days in his study and Emma withdrew to her two rooms in the attic. They lived together but apart.
