Emma's attic bedroom

Emma's attic bedroom

For a large portion of their marriage Emma and Thomas slept apart. This is Emma's bedroom – one of two attic rooms that she occupied at Max Gate. She died here in 1912. After her death Thomas finds a bitterly critical manuscript entitled "What I think of my husband" and discovers she has been writing letters to her friends for many years complaining about him. Despite this he begins to write a large number of poems concerning his deep and abiding love for Emma and his great sense of loss. These are some of the most powerful love poems in the English Language.
