Hardy sat as a Magistrate in the upstairs courtroom of this building and downstairs was the Corn Exchange where Bathsheba would be the only woman farmer selling her corn in "Far from the Madding Crowd". It is also incidentally where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried and sentenced to transportation.
