Hardy is recorded here on a wall plaque as an Alderman and Councillor of Dorchester. He was awarded freedom of the City - which he claimed was worth more to him than his many Honorary Doctorates. This is also where Henchard presided as Mayor of "Casterbridge" in the novel of the same name.
