Emma was born in 1840, the daughter of a Plymouth Solicitor, who never approved of her marriage to Thomas. She was the youngest of five children. Emma moved to Boscastle to stay with her brother-in-law the Vicar of St Juliot's. Emma had a lack of restraint and a childish impulsiveness that Hardy saw as 'dash and charm'. He was captivated from the first sight of Emma.
