The four years from 1870 to 1874 transformed Hardy's life personally and professionally. He met, courted, and eventually married, Emma Gifford and by dint of gruelling, tenacious, effort he transformed himself from an Architect's assistant to a successful novelist with ambitions to be a poet. Neither family approved of the marriage.
