Thomas Hardy
Hardy close to the end at Max Gate. Hardy had spent his life attacking and deriding the established values of Victorian England but in a Hardyan twist of fate he finishes life as part of the establishment – one of Britain's most celebrated writers. The pallbearers at his State funeral in Westminster Abbey included the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, the heads of both Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as Rudyard Kipling and A E Housman.
