The Kitchen, Hardy's Cottage
Hardy's mother was a good cook having been in service in London and Dorset as a head cook. The young Thomas helped to keep the extensive vegetable garden at the cottage. Hardy learned many stories of village life and customs from his Grandmother and Mother whilst assisting them in the warmth of this kitchen – stories that would be appropriated and re-presented in narrative and prose.
